HELMUT NEWTON

Helmut Newton was a German photographer who is famous for his provocative and erotic fashion photography, he has been shown in publications such as Vogue. Newton focuses a lot of his work on photographing erotic fashion photography of women, he does this in a lot of his work to de-sexualise the female body and make it appear ‘normal’ to be shown off. Newton’s work is further unusual as he photographs almost all his work in black and white, this is because his early photography was taken on analogue cameras and so he continued with an old feel to his photography.

This photograph connotes how fed up and worn down women become from having to reach expectations, this this shown by the model looking glamorous but also messy. The model is wearing a gown and nightdress, this adds to her looking tired and as if she had just woken up. This could also be used to show her being provocative and sexy, again trying to keep up with glamourised expectations. The model is smoking, I think Newton did this to refer to the glamourisation of smoking in the media which connotes how she is still trying to be accepted by society.
