LINDER STERLING
Born Linder Mulvey in Liverpool in 1954, she spent most of her adult life in Manchester, as she studied art at Manchester Polytechnic. She is known as a radical feminist and a well-known figure of the Manchester punk and post-punk scene. Sterling was known for her collages, which often combined images taken from pornographic magazines with images from women's fashion and domestic magazines, making a point about the cultural expectations of women. Many of her works were published in the punk collage fanzine Secret Public, which she co-founded with Jon Savage.
I think this piece is used to connote the growing expectation of women created by the media. Woman are expected to be domestic by taking care of cooking and cleaning as well as looking nice and appealing to men. This is shown by the collage elements (Iron, kitchen, nails and makeup), it looks very busy and crowded which can again show the overwhelming expectation of women. Sterlings work created great impact at the time as there were not that many other artists/photographers who took photographs in this way.
